  8.   Harry  Harrison  is the man who wrote
  9. the  books  about  Slippery Jim DiGriz,
  10. the  Stainless  Steel Rat. In this book
  11. he  narrates the history and effects of
  12. the  mattermit  device,   the  ultimate 
  13. means   of   transportation.  The  book 
  14. consists  of  short  stories  that give
  15. short  insights  into peaceful and less
  16. peaceful  ways  to  use  the device. At
  17. first  there  were  the  pioneers  like 
  18. those  who landed into the gravity well
  19. of  Saturn  to  find  out the effect of
  20. extra  gravity.  Then  there  were  the
  21. mattermit  wars  where  device was used
  22. for  fast  tactical  deployment  behind
  23. enemy  ranks.  Wars  caused  recession,
  24. after which the re-explorers opened the
  25. old  mattermission  gates  and returned
  26. the forgotten planets into civilization
  27. -for a price.

  36. In  the  beginning  only the strong, or 
  37. the  ingenious,  survived.  During  the
  38. millennias  all  the  rest  were heaped

  40. pile  composted,  turned  back to shit, 
  41. from  which all the losers had come, an
  42. immensely  fruitful  medium  for growth
  43. was created. This substance was so good
  44. that  even  the  less  strong,  and the 
  45. plain  ones, were able to live. Finally
  46. there happened a minor miracle and even
  47. the  powerless  and  the  mindless ones 
  48. made it.  From this we have examples in
